Many Indonesian oil palm smallholders are struggling to survive amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted the country’s palm oil exports. The predicament has led company-forestry community partnerships to improve the livelihoods of affected smallholders living near forested regions.
Two farmer groups have partnered with Royal Lestari Utama’s Jambi subsidiaries PT Lestari Asri Jaya (“LAJ”), and PT Wanamukti Wisesa (“WW”). The partnership with LAJ has helped trained farmers to cultivate food crops and sustainable fish farming. It has also assisted them to receive seed donations. LAJ is also purchasing the crops harvested by the farmer group. WW, on the other hand, has ensured that farmers’ household basic necessities are fulfilled from the sale of harvested food crops.
